AirTag Helps Truck Owners Locate Their Stolen Vehicle, But Discovery Leads To A Grim Ending

AirTag

An unnamed man in his 30s stole a truck in San Antonio, but unbeknownst to him, the owners left an AirTag inside the vehicle, likely to easily track it down in case it got stolen. Unfortunately, the story took a different route exceptionally quickly as the owners decided to use lethal force, which resulted in the loss of life.

The pursuit of the stolen vehicle led to a gunfight, but the thief was not so lucky with his attempt

The incident was reported by KSAT, and according to AppleInsider, the truck owners did not wait for law enforcement to make their move, and decided to move with haste. Using the AirTag that was left in the truck, they tracked down the thief to a shopping center located on Southeast Military Drive. At this stage, the smart approach would have been to wait for the police, but as the report suggests, the owners’ patience must have run thin as they decided to confront the suspect themselves.

The discovery led to an ugly unraveling of events, as a gunfire ensued, with the truck owners ending up on the right side of the track; the thief was not as lucky. Police suspect that it may have been possible for the criminal to have pulled out his firearm, which resulted in a direct retaliation. So far, the truck owners have not been charged over the incident, as an investigation is ongoing, with the police attempting to conclude if the suspect was armed in the first place.

SAPD public information officer Nick Soliz said that it is frustrating when having to locate your stolen property and advises against individuals from taking matters into their own hands, as it might be possible for the thieves to catch you by surprise. We would also recommend AirTag owners that if they believe that their car, bike, or truck has been stolen, do not start an investigation themselves; involve the authorities first.

Previously, we reported that a New York resident, Stephen Herbert, manage to successfully locate his bike using an AirTag, but a confrontation with the thieves left him with a broken nose. Apple’s trackers are extremely helpful in multiple scenarios, but if it is a question of a potential crime, then taking help from law enforcement is encouraged.
