There’s a long, rich history of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games, with the most successful adaptations usually harkening back to the lighthearted multiplayer brawlers Konami made in the 80s and 90s. Well, it seems the turtles are going to be trying something a little different. According to a new article from Polygon, a video game adaptation of the acclaimed Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin graphic novel is in the works.
For those unfamiliar, TMNT: The Last Ronin was released last year to much critical and fan acclaim (it currently has a 4.8 out of 5 rating on Amazon). The comic takes place in a post-apocalyptic New York where a lone surviving turtle (I won’t spoil which one) attempts to get revenge for the death of his brothers. Here’s an official description…
“Who is the Last Ronin? In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost. From legendary TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, get ready for the final story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles three decades in the making! What terrible events destroyed his family and left New York a crumbling, post-apocalyptic nightmare? All will be revealed in this climactic Turtle tale that sees longtime friends becoming enemies and new allies emerging in the most unexpected places. Can the surviving Turtle triumph?”
According to Paramount Global senior vice president for games and emerging media Doug Rosen, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin will have a darker tone to match the book, with Rosen comparing the experience to the new God of War titles. That means it will be a single-player experience, although multiple characters may be playable via flashback sequences. The studio developing The Last Ronin is currently unknown, but with the graphic novel only coming out last year, development is still in its early stages with launch likely a “few years off.”
As somebody who’s kept up with the Ninja Turtles comics, I’m happy to see something other than the kid-friendly cartoon shows get celebrated, so consider me excited for The Last Ronin.
