PCGH CPU Ranking Shows Intel Chips Clear Winner Over AMD Ryzen In Gaming Benchmarks1

PC Games Hardware (PCGH) recently tested 28 Intel Core & AMD Ryzen CPUs on eleven of the most recent and popular AAA games. The benchmark tests were a culmination of 21 total, with 6 of some of the top benchmark tests on the market to see what processor is the best for gaming.

28 CPUs are placed through a gamut of benchmarks to discover if AMD Ryzen or Intel Core is the right choice for consumers

PCGH does warn about the limitations they placed on resolution, why that was important, and why the group only ran each test in 720p with a screen resolution size of 1280 x 720.

The games selected for this test were:

  • The Callisto Protocol
  • Doom Eternal
  • Dying Light
  • F1 22
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator
  • A Plague Tale: Requiem
  • Total War Warhammer 3
  • The Witcher 3 (Next-gen version)
  • Anno 1800
  • Hitman 3
  • Cyberpunk 2077

For graphics cards, the group used the PNY GeForce RTX 4090 EPIC-X, mentioning that the graphics card limit "is almost impossible" and also saying that they activated ReBAR along with the latest updates and drivers. Standard benchmarks were processed, with some of the top gaming benchmarks being chosen, such as:

  • CineBench R23
  • 3DMark Time Spy Extreme (CPU)
  • Handbrake
  • 7-Zip
  • Adobe Premiere Pro (Puget)
  • Adobe Photoshop (Puget)

The official ranking is below, complete with performance for each CPU. Looking at the results, the group found that the Intel Core i9-13900KS outperformed its competitor, AMD, and its Ryzen 7950X processor, which offers similar frequency but twelve threads less with the same memory.

Additionally, the above testing results were after three runs, testing overall performance, gaming performance, and application performance. Above are the overall performance totals, but for gaming and applications separately, Intel's Core i9-13900KS outperformed the Ryzen 9 7950X by 19.4% and 3.2%, respectively, meaning that for application use, the AMD processor was reasonably negligible. Still, when it comes to gaming, Intel was the superior CPU.

The group tested under 720p with a limitation to using 1280 x 760 resolution is interesting as they tested in what they considered "usual" size resolutions to measure the performance of CPU and GPU. A lower set number stops comparisons of one user with higher graphics and processor capability from someone with a more inadequate system. This allows for a more realistic test result.
