Everyone has a browser they prefer over the other. Every company offers users different advantages of switching default browsers, but it is entirely up to you which browser you prefer at the end of the day. If you are a Windows user, you know that the default browser is Edge, and you can always switch it if you choose. However, Microsoft has made switching the default browser more complex in Windows 11. This tutorial will address this and show you how to change the default browser on Windows 11 Computers.
Change Default Browser on Windows 11
Windows 10 had a very straightforward method for setting a default browser. However, Windows 11 is comparatively complex. You may easily set up a default browser; however, other complexities follow, like setting up a default app to open PDF files, what happens when you click on a link, etc.
Perhaps the fastest way to change the default browser is as soon as you installed your preferred browser. You will be offered to ‘Set as default’ like in Google Chrome. However, you can change the default browser later as well.
Change Browser to Edge
For example, my default browser is Chrome, and I wish to change it to Edge, I will do the following:
- Open Microsoft Edge.
- Click on the three horizontal dots at the top right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- Select Default browser from the left pane.
- Select Make default.
Change Default Browser From Edge to Chrome
If you want to change from Edge to Google Chrome, do the following:
Step-1: Open Google Chrome.
Step-2: Click on the three vertical dots at the top of the screen.
Step-3: Select Settings.
Step-4:Select the Default browser option from the left pane.
Step-5: Select Make default.
[As you can see, the steps for making a browser default are the same. However, when you change from Edge to any other browser, there are more complexities than following Windows 11 computers, unlike Windows 10.]
When you changed from Edge to another browser, you will be automatically directed to the Default Apps section in the Apps tab in Settings. In this section, you will be able to change or set default apps for a particular action.
It seems that changing your default browser is a little more difficult in Windows 11, which Microsoft has done intentionally.
Step-6: Scroll down and click on your default browser (in my case Google Chrome).
You will see that some file types will still be set to open in Edge by default. You will have to change this manually.
Step-7: Click on the file type you wish to change.
Step-8: You will be given the option to ‘Try it out and ‘Switch anyway.’
Step-9: Select the browser from the list provided and press OK.
You will have to do this for all the file types. You will have to set a default app for some file types by clicking the plus sign and choosing from a list.
