Facebook Messenger Now Allows You to Turn on End-to-End Encryption for Voice and Video Calls

End-to-end encryption is undoubtedly one of the best features you could want in a modern messaging app. Facebook has finally decided that Messenger is getting end-to-end encryption for both voice and video calls. Facebook Messenger previously offered something like that by allowing the user to switch to a "secret conversion" mode, but that also disables many features from working. However, now, Messenger will allow you to enable end-to-end encryption for voice and video calls.

Facebook announced this in a blog post, and they also stated that there are over 150 million video calls on Facebook Messenger every day. Facebook first rolled out the end-to-end encryption to the Messenger app back in 2016. Facebook's WhatsApp already has support for end-to-end encrypted phone calls, along with a lot of the messaging apps.

Facebook Messenger Finally Becomes More Secure with End-to-End Encryption, Disappearing Messages, and More

In the same post, Facebook has also stated that its disappearing messages feature is now being added to Messenger. Messages can be set to disappear at a certain time that ranges from 5 seconds all the way up to 24 hours.

Moving on, Facebook has also said that the end-to-end encrypted group chats and calls in Messenger will soon be rolled out. Before this, secret conversations could only take place with individual users. However, Facebook has stated that this will be changing in the "coming weeks." You will also be able to set up delivery controls so you decide who can reach your chats list, who goes to your requests folder, and who cannot message you at all.

Last but not least, Facebook is kicking off a "limited test" with the adults in certain countries to opt-in to end-to-end encrypted messages and calls for one-on-one conversations on Instagram. It is similar to how Facebook Messenger works, wherein you need to have an existing chat or be following each other to start an end-to-end encrypted DM. You will be able to block people and report people as you have come to expect.
