We will show you how you can access Recovery Mode on your M1 powered MacBook Air, MacBook Pro or Mac mini. It is absolutely simple.
Boot Your Apple Silicon (M1) Powered MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini into Recovery Mode and Fix Several Problems
Though we have covered previously how you can go ahead and reinstall macOS on your M1 powered Mac using Recovery Mode. But today, we will only touch upon how you can access Recovery Mode as a standalone tutorial.
First and foremost, we will quickly discuss why you would want to use Recovery Mode in the first place. The reason is a simple one: there is something wrong with your Mac and you want to make things right again. For example, you plan on doing a clean installation of macOS, you can do that from here, that too straight from the internet, no USB drives required. Or, you want to boot your Mac into Safe Mode, in order to diagnose what is wrong with your computer. Lastly, there is something wrong with your internal drive and you wish to perform a diagnostic on it, ultimately landing a fix. It can be done from here as well.
But, the journey begins with entering Recovery Mode in the first place. So, let us dive straight into it.
Enter Recovery Mode on Apple Silicon Mac
Note: These steps do not apply to Intel-based Macs
Step 1. If you Mac is powered on, then click on the Apple logo in the menu bar
Step 2. Click on Shut Down and let your Mac power down completely
Step 3. Turn on your Mac while pressing and holding the Power button
Step 4. Keep on holding the button until you see Loading startup options on the display
Step 5. Click on Options
Step 6. Click on Continue
That is it. You are not in Recovery Mode on your M1 powered MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini. From here you can perform several tasks best suited for your situation. But it is highly likely that you are here because you want to reinstall macOS Big Sur, therefore click on Reinstall macOS and follow the on-screen steps. If not, then take action accordingly.
We are glad that Apple has somewhat made the process of getting into Recovery Mode a little more obvious compared to how it was before. On an Intel Mac, there are several ways of getting into recovery, depending on what you want to achieve. With key combinations like Command-R or Option-Shift-Command-R, it is a ball game we are glad we will not be dealing with going forward.
