As we’re done with the iPhone 11 launch, only one flagship smartphone is left for launch in 2019, if we don’t count the OnePlus 7T upgrade. Google’s Pixel smartphones are the last high-end devices to launch in a calendar year, and resultingly, there’s a lot of time for their leaks to surface. Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL’s Facial Unlock Might Work With Regular And Tinted Glasses Suggests Leak
The Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL are confirmed to house a brand new radar chip dubbed ‘Soli’. This chip will provide the devices with gestural navigation support, but the extent of the features covered by it is unknown. Nevertheless, what’s for certain is that the features offered through Soli will be one of a kind, ensuring that the smartphones offer an unparalleled experience.
Ever since Apple launched Face ID on the iPhone X, a similar solution on Android for biometric recognition is yet to surface. Whether this is due to technological constraints or due to unwillingness on the manufacturers part is uncertain. By looking at today’s screenshots of the Pixel 4 in Chinese that have surfaced today on Weibo, we can, however, confirm that the gadgets will not use fingerprint recognition and will rely solely on facial data.
The images reveal key details for a feature that’s dubbed as ‘Face Unlock’. They show that users will be able to use their Pixel 4 with just one eye. Additionally, wearing either transparent or tinted glasses won’t hamper the device from recognizing the user. For security, the images reveal that the data stored by the Pixel 4’s facial recognition will be non-transferrable from the device. Finally, the smartphone will also be able to judge if someone else is trying to catch its user off guard by trying to unlock the device by pointing it at the owner’s face.
These features sound cool, but we’re uncertain about the nature of the Pixel 4 lineup’s facial recognition. Will the gadget’s sensors capture a photograph of its user or will they capture a 3D depth map similar to the iPhone? Given that the upcoming devices will not feature fingerprint recognition (according to these images), these are important questions and we hope that they’re answered in due time.
