Overwatch has finally been confirmed for Nintendo Switch last week, and the game will be released on the console next month worldwide. Fans, however, are wondering how this version of the game will run, and news isn’t particularly good.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Overwatch producer Wes Yanagi confirmed that the game will run at 30 FPS in both docked and undocked mode. Resolution, on the other hand, will be different between the two modes.
So really what we wanted to do when we started this whole thing was to really deliver on that authentic Overwatch experience. Our goal was making sure it could run smoothly and look the way that we’re happy with. So, it runs at 30fps, docked at 900p and un-docked at 720p, and it runs really smoothly. I think when you play it, and you get your hands on it, you just go, yeah I’m playing Overwatch.
Overwatch running at 30 FPS was somewhat expected, considering cuts have to be made to get the game running on the console, but it’s disappointing, considering the high-speed experience of the game requires a smooth frame rate. This may also be a problem for the future implementation of cross-platform play, as the game runs at 60 FPS on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Overwatch will release on Nintendo Switch in October as Overwatch Legendary Edition, which will include all of the content that has been released so far as well as motion controls and more.
Overwatch Legendary Edition puts the definitive version of Blizzard Entertainment’s acclaimed team shooter in Nintendo Switch owners’ hands, complete with the latest content and gameplay updates. Players will select from a roster of 31 vibrant heroes as they face off in a variety of casual and competitive multiplayer modes and battle over map objectives in 28 different locations around the earth (and on the moon). Nintendo Switch gamers also have the option to take control of their heroes in a new way using the console’s built-in gyroscopic motion controls, which let players tilt their console to line up the perfect shot as McCree, pilot D.Va through the air, or quickly turn to deflect incoming projectiles as Genji.
