Samsung choosing to add 5G on the Galaxy Note 10 and S10 is a move made simply to ensure that the gadgets feature every high-end spec out there. After all, marketing a lineup with 5G is better than marketing it without 5G. But, since 5G still hasn’t been fully implemented by carriers, and won’t be fully be implemented in the near future, having a device supporting it doesn’t benefit the user much except for being able to see amazing download speeds in the few areas that do support the network.
Speaking of which, if you’re wondering about how fast 5G really is, we’ve got some numbers for you today. These suggest that it’s way beyond what users are used to experiencing with standard LTE networks. The tests were carried out by the good folks over at MacWorld in Providence, Rhode Island, and they also point out at a drawback of having insanely fast download speeds.
In the two tests conducted, the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G demonstrates the capability to download data at 1,105 and 1,634 Mbps. The network that the device was connected to was Verizon’s mmWave 5G network. The speeds were however obtained when the gadget was used directly under the node, and movement away from it resulted in a signal drop. Additionally, the Galaxy Note 10 Plus 5G being tested witnessed a 60% drop in battery during the time period that it was connected to, and download data using a 5G network.
This battery drop is concerning and goes to show how 5G is still an unfinished product. But the speeds demonstrated in today’s test are astounding and have the potential to transform the way through which users connect to the internet. Samsung’s early experimentation with 5G on its devices will also give the Korean tech giant plenty of experience to finetune its devices for the time when 5G does become easily available.
