We reported yesterday that some users were having trouble installing the latest Windows 10 cumulative update. Some couldn’t install the latest update on Windows 10 May 2019 Update, others reported experiencing random reboots, reporting seeing different error codes, including 0x800f0982 and 0x80073701.
Microsoft has now acknowledged the issue, however, it says the problem was introduced by the update delivered back in May. The update on Windows Health Dashboard reads:
Updates may fail to install and you may receive Error 0x80073701
Installation of updates may fail and you may receive the error message, “Updates Failed, There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later” or “Error 0x80073701” on the Windows Update dialog or within Update history.
Affected platforms:
- Client: Windows 10, version 1903
- Server: Windows Server, version 1903
The Windows maker added that it is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
The company has also acknowledged the problem where “Apps using Visual Basic 6 (VB6), VBA, and VBScript may stop responding.” This particular issue was introduced by Build 18362.295, which is the latest August 2019 cumulative update, and affects almost all the supported Windows 10 versions, along with Windows 8.1 and Windows 7.
Microsoft said that it estimates a solution will be available late this month. “The ‘optional’ update will be available on Microsoft Update Catalog, Windows Update, Microsoft Update and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS),” the Windows maker wrote. “As with any ‘optional’ update, you will need to Check for updates to receive the update once it is released.”
Windows 10 updates’ quality control remains in question
Windows 10 was having a pretty smooth run since the release of the latest May 2019 Update. While Microsoft has promised time and again that it will start focusing on the quality of updates it delivers, the last few cumulative updates have been no better than what we have been seeing since the introduction of Windows 10 in 2015.
The affected number of users may be small, but it’s still a significant issue when every update fails for at least some users and creates issues for some more. Things get even worse when everyone in the industry is pushing the end users to install a certain Patch Tuesday update as it carries fixes to critical security flaws, but that update itself is suffering from quality issues, adding into the trust issues that some Windows 10 users have had since the release of the bug-ridden Windows 10 October 2018 Update that Microsoft had to pull back due to the number of issues that were reported after its release.
The company has announced delivering the next version of Windows 10 as a cumulative update. Windows 10 19H2 or the October 2019 Update is being tested through the Slow Ring Insiders, and users are hoping that without the burden of trying new features, Microsoft will be able to focus entirely on improving performance and quality of the operating system.
