iPhone 11 shipments have been estimated by DigiTimes, stating that this year, the three models Apple will most likely announce on September 10 will garner 70 million units. Even though the newer devices are expected to feature improved specifications, it might not be enough to save Apple from a sales slump the company is facing. Additionally, estimates of the 2018 iPhone range were provided before these models were officially launched, and the figures were much higher compared to the latest estimates.
Increase in Shipments Could Be Caused by Reducing iPhone XR Pricing, Given That It’s the Most Popular Model in the U.S.
DigiTimes earlier published a report stating that the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max shipments for 2018 would surpass 85 million units. A 70-million estimate for iPhone 11 shipments appears rather low in comparison, but there could be a few reasons for this. In general, there is a global slowdown of smartphone shipments, as a lot of customers don’t believe that a flagship device should cost between $900 and $1000.
This sentiment could be shared by a lot of customers because companies like Huawei and Xiaomi have been churning out devices like the K20 Pro and Honor 20 Pro. Both these phones ship with flagship-level hardware specifications but don’t even come close to what Apple’s iPhone range costs. Also, the lack of 5G connectivity support for this year’s iPhones could also be a reason as to why customers aren’t willing to upgrade.
The first wave of 5G-ready iPhones is said to arrive next year, with a recent survey concluding that customers are willing to pay up to $1600 for an Apple-branded device as long as they get to experience blazing-fast download and upload speeds. Other manufacturers could also be betting on 5G to drastically improve smartphone shipments because data from Canalys reveals that by 2023, devices with 4G modems will be left behind in favor of 5G-ready ones.
While Apple might not be doing any favors by charging a premium for its iPhone 11 range, what it can do to maintain a healthy market share is drop the iPhone XR price. Seeing as how the latter has been the most popular iPhone model in the U.S., a price drop can encourage customers to pick this one up. Also, we wouldn’t worry too much about these iPhone 11 shipments, because at the end of the day, they are estimates and can change depending on a lot of factors.
