Galaxy Tab S3 and Tab a (2017) Receiving Android Pie Update

Despite being out for almost a year, Android Pie is yet to make its way to several Android-based smartphones and tablets. The rollout is expected to continue well after Android Q releases later this year and this is something we’re going to have to live with till the foreseeable future. Today, the latest recipient of the software (via Sammobile) is Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Tab A (2017). Both devices launched with Android Nougat on board, making this last major software upgrade for the tablets.

The build weighs in at a little over 1.2GB and brings the August 2019 security patch to the Tab S3 and the June  2019 security patches to the Galaxy Tab A(2017) which is rather odd, considering that both devices received the update simultaneously. It is likely that Samsung may be sitting on the Galaxy Tab A (2017) update on a while and finally decided to roll it out after ironing out the kinks.

The Android Pie build is based on OneUI and brings with it all the associated design changes. Some of the other improvements include support for HEIF images, Galaxy Buds, and the Gear Icon X. Also included are newer photo editing tools baked into the gallery, new emojis for the stock keyboard and new Bixby Features.

The Android Pie update for the Tab S3 seems to be rolling out only to the LTE variant in some south-east Asian countries. The update for the Tab A, on the other hand, is available only in Malaysia. Head over to Settings> Software Update, and tap on the Download updates manually option to check for its availability. Alternatively, you can even sideload it using Samsung Smart Switch to sideload the release on to your device via a USB cable.
