2020 iPad Pro Could Ship With 3D Sensing Camera System at the Back

3D sensing cameras should be found at the backside of the 2020 iPad Pro lineup

In recent years, iPhones have become less of a star product for Apple, as the global smartphone market continues to shrink, but it still remains the primary revenue generator for the company, according to various data sources. Meanwhile, the Cupertino giant continues its lead in some other categories. For instance, its tablets outsell competing products by a wide margin and this could be the reason why to keep that market share unrivaled, the 2020 iPad Pro lineup will allegedly get a coveted feature before iPhones.

South Korean Firm Reportedly Providing 3D Sensing Camera Modules for Next Year’s Tablet Series

Traditionally, iPhones get all the newest features first, and there have been very few exceptions to this. However, if a new report from a South Korean publication The Elec is any indication, the 2020 iPad Pro family will get rear 3D sensing cameras in March 2020. Now, the 2020 iPhones are also projected to get the same feature, which means the iPad Pro will apparently get the technology a good six months before the mobile phones get them. The 3D sensing camera feature will supposedly use a time-of-flight sensor (ToF) to create accurate 3D maps.

This will allow for improved pictures, better 3D mapping, and will also help with Augmented Reality apps, something which Apple has been a strong proponent of. The report says that industry sources claim that South Korea’s Derkwoo Electronics will be providing some modules such as stiffeners and brackets for the 3D sensing camera and that mass production will begin by the end of the year. This means that we may not see a new iPad Pro in the last quarter of 2019, as predicted earlier and to jog your memory a little bit, the last time a revision of Apple’s ‘professional’ tablet lineup was launched, it was back in 2018.

On the other hand, it’s also possible that a new iPad Pro model without the 3D rear camera will launch by the end of the year, and a new model with 3D sensing capabilities will be released next year in November after the 2020 iPhones get the feature. When Apple demonstrates features related to AR, it usually uses iPads and not iPhones, so maybe the Cupertino giant believes that it might be a good idea to introduce the rear 3D sensing technology with the 2020 iPad Pro.

All in all, the reports seem a little conflicting, so we will have to wait for more information to come through to obtain some clarity on the matter. Until then, stay tuned for more updates from our side.
