The NPD Group have released their full North American sales data for June 2019, and it was another down month for the industry. Consumers spent $959 million on games and hardware, down 13 percent from June 2018. The big reason for this decline was sputtering hardware sales, which were down a whopping 33 percent year-on-year.
It wasn’t all bad news on the hardware front — the Switch continues to sell well, coming out on top in June and the first half of 2019, but Nintendo’s success isn’t enough to make up for the slumping Xbox One and PS4. As for software, the charts were topped by the retro-flavored Super Mario Maker 2 and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat 11, which topped both April and May, held strong at the #3 position.
Here are June’s top-20 games according to NPD:
- Super Mario Maker 2
- Crash Team Racing Nitro Fueled
- Mortal Kombat 11
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Minecraft
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- NBA 2K19
- Mario Kart 8
- Days Gone
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Red Dead Redemption II
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- MLB 19: The Show
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
- Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
- New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
- Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey
- Super Mario Party
- God of War 2018
And here are the NPD best-sellers of 2019 so far:
- Mortal Kombat 11
- Kingdom Hearts III
- Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
- Anthem
- Resident Evil 2
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
- Days Gone
- Red Dead Redemption II
- MLB 19: The Show
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 4
2019 has been Nintendo’s year thus far, and I expect the winning streak to continue. The Switch and games like Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Zelda: Link’s Awakening, and Pokemon Sword and Shield should dominate the coming months.
