Huawei Mate X Spotted in the Hands of a Company Executive

After months of dilly-dallying, Samsung finally confirmed the Galaxy Fold’s release date today. Not too long in its heels, its only competitor—the Huawei Mate X—made an appearance in the wild. The future of both foldable tablets was in jeopardy, although for entirely different reasons. The images originated via Weibo, where Chinese media members managed to catch Huawei CEO Richard Yu with his very own Huawei Mate X at Shenzhen International Airport.

Yu further added that the Mate X had been his daily driver for quite some time. When asked about a release date, he said, ‘it would have to wait.’ The phablet has already made its way past TENAA; the Chinese government’s telecommunication regulatory authority, so releasing it is only a matter of Huawei ironing out the kinks. “It’s coming in September – at the latest,” said Vincent Pang, President of Huawei’s Western European Region, in a statement earlier. “Probably earlier, but definitely September is guaranteed.”

Huawei is likely delaying the Mate X’s release date to prevent the occurrence of a Galaxy Fold-like disaster. The last thing Huawei needs is more bad PR, considering the amount of negative press they’ve received already. It is also worth mentioning that the Mate X folds outward, as opposed to inward like the Galaxy Fold, so Huawei will have to go an extra mile to ensure that it holds up against the wear and tear induced by daily use.

There is also a high likelihood that Huawei has already perfected the Mate X and is merely waiting for the right time to release it. It is unlikely that they’ll try and steal the Galaxy Note 10’s thunder next month. If the President of Huawei’s Western European Region is to be believed, it’ll be out well before the Pixel 4.
