Although they are more than a year away, the 2020 iPhone lineup already sounds exciting, with a new report claiming that they will sport a screen with a switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate. Now, you may have heard about the term refresh rate before, especially in connection to gaming-centric phones such as the Razer Phone, and the Razer Phone 2, which also feature a 120Hz refresh rate. If it sounds like jargon to you, let us break it down for you. A refresh rate is simply the number of times a screen is updated in a second, so the higher the rate, the smoother the display.
Apple Rumored to Be in Talks With Samsung and LG to Incorporate the Technology in Future Devices
The thing with a faster refresh rate is that it consumes more battery, which is perhaps the reason why Apple is presumably planning to have a switchable refresh rate. A refresh rate is more important in the context of gaming and videos, so with such a display, users will be able to toggle it down to 60Hz when viewing static images to prolong battery life. The OnePlus 7 Pro uses the same approach, but it has a 60Hz/90Hz rate.
Tipster Ice Universe also states that Apple is in talks with its OLED suppliers Samsung and LG regarding a display with a 120Hz display rate. This isn’t something new for Apple, as the 2017 and 2018 12.9-inch and 10.5-inch iPad Pro models also sport a 120Hz screen, with the Cupertino giant calling the technology ProMotion Display. Similar to what the latest leak alleges, the ProMotion displays are also switchable, with the refresh rate going down to 24Hz when a static image is on a screen and 48Hz when a video is being played.

The 2020 iPhones are also expected to come with 5G connectivity and they will most likely also get the reverse wireless charging feature that will supposedly make a debut with this year’s lineup. Other than that, it is also believed that one next-generation iPhone will get in-display Touch ID support, but it may be exclusive to the Chinese market. With so much to look forward to in the 2020 iPhones, most users are expected to sit out this year’s lineup, which is expected to come with some camera-related upgrades and the aforementioned bilateral wireless charging.
Bear in mind that the 2018 iPhone lineup features a 120Hz touch sample rate, and it’s a feature most likely present on this year’s iPhone range, but it isn’t the same as a 120Hz refresh rate.
