THQ Nordic Announce Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated

So, it wasn’t too long ago that I covered the fact that THQ Nordic have close to eighty games in active development, with forty-eight of those titles having not been announced so far. Earlier this week the company revealed that they were going to announce three of these games, with the first of three being today. That game is Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated.

Honestly, it’s a little underwhelming of an announcement, to say the least. To be fair to the game, Spongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom has become a bit of a cult classic over time since it was released by the original THQ, the ones that Nordic Games bought the name for. I was mostly just expecting a title from one of the companies massive roster of high-profile IP’s to get announced.

Still, let’s be fair to this, it’s got the potential to be a pretty damn good game, especially if it’s true to the original, which is still one of the best handheld games from the old Gameboy Advance days. What we can see from the trailer, below, is that the game will be releasing on the PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch and is in development by Purple Lamp Studios, the team behind the currently-in-Early-Access The Guild 3.

Still, this is only day one of three. Not to belittle this game, because I’ll be playing it when it comes out for sure, but I’m hoping that days two and three have larger announcements. The second and third games will be revealed tomorrow and Friday, 19:00 CEST, and one can only guess what the games are actually going to be. I wouldn’t be surprised though, considering the massive swathe of high-profile IP’s that THQ Nordic now own, if this isn’t a bit of a slow build into something bigger.

Here’s hoping for something like Timesplitters, Alone in the Dark, Act of War or even Kingdoms of Amalur. Only time will tell!
