Thought a Penta-Lens Camera Smartphone Was Overkill? Sony Is Rumored to Be Working on a Device With Six Rear Sensors

While smartphones with triple cameras at the back have started to gain some form of ubiquity, the highest number of sensors mounted at the rear side of a handset is five; HMD Global’s Nokia 9 PureView currently holds that record. While it is immediately assumed that having more cameras equals a better smartphone photography and videography experience, some manufacturers such as Huawei have actually proven that having more sensors does equal a better imaging output.

Sony, on the other hand, is a brand that certainly wants some form of recognition and it is strange that a company that holds a massive market in the smartphone sensor category fails to churn out mobile devices with impressive imaging prowess. That might change in the future as the Japanese giant has been rumored to be working on an Xperia device with a total of six cameras at the back.

Sony Likely to Make an Appearance at IFA 2019 Detailing Key Features of Its Upcoming Xperia Smartphone

According to tipster Max. J, Sony has been rumored to be making a device with six rear cameras at the back, although the rest of the specifications appear to be in limbo at this current time. In addition to the six sensors at the back, the unnamed Xperia smartphone is also reported to have a dual camera system at the front. Having six cameras at the back side will open up a myriad of possibilities for the user, such as improved optical zoom, a wide-angle camera, and a ToF sensor combo for improved and accurate Portrait shots and use for AR-related purposes.

Google made fair use of a dual front camera system when it launched its Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL last year. The secondary camera at the front features a wide-angle lens and allows the user to obtain more detail from the background. We believe that Sony will be attempting to incorporate the same feature, although what we’re detailing for you guys is pure speculation at this point.

Max. J also shared an image via his Twitter account but that’s only a render, and we’re sure to receive more updates on the matter in the coming months. Sony is not expected to launch such a device this year, so let’s keep our eyes peeled for a 2020 release. What features do you feel Sony will arm its upcoming hexa-lens Xperia smartphone with? Let us know your thoughts down in the comments.
