Snapdragon 855 Is Now EAL4+ Certified In A Good Step Forward

With a smartphone’s computing power increasing day by day, the scope of activities that users can carry out with their devices is also going up. A smartphone is used to carry out a large number of tasks, and over the past few years, users have started to rely on their gadgets to carry out financial transactions as well. Therefore, it’s important that our devices are secure, and today we’ve got good news for users of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Take a look below for more details.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 Has Received The EAL4+ Certification Allowing The Processor To Store Sensitive Information Securely

Modern-day SoCs have a dedicated secure element that stores sensitive information. This is at the center of a gadget’s security and is designed in a manner that makes it difficult for hackers to gain access to it. Qualcomm dubs this hardware as a Secure Processing Unit (SPU), and according to the company, the SPU is responsible for storing data for biometric recognition. This data, in turn, can be used to authenticate financial transactions on an Android gadget.

Now, the SPU that’s present on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 is certified as EAL4+ secure. The EAL (Evaluation Assurance Level) certification guarantees that basic security level features on a system are implemented beforehand so that developers can develop apps and features with peace of mind.

The certification ensures that the Snapdragon 855 can provide ”Smart Card levels of security assurance.” It offers device manufacturers peace of mind and removes the need for them to implement additional hardware on a gadget to ensure its security credentials (like Google’s Titan M for the Pixels 3). The EAL4+ certification for the Snapdragon 855 has been approved by the German Federal Office for Information Security, the Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik. “The certification, which uses international and transparent standards, is an important contribution to strengthen the users’ confidence in the security of IT products.” believes GFO president Arne Schönbohm.

Qualcomm’s Secure Processing Unit will be able to meet the requirements of Google’s Android StrongBox. StrongBox is the API responsible for generating cryptographic keys in Android, and storing these keys on a device’s secure element (the Snapdragon 855’s SPU). It’s a good step for mobile security, and as our gadgets continue to increase their presence in users’ everyday lives, the EAL4+ certification for the 855 will result in a lot of good outcomes.
