OPPO is all set to unveil its under-display camera technology tomorrow at the MWC Shanghai trade show. Although a couple of other companies, including Xiaomi and Samsung are also working on this technology, OPPO would be the first one to formally unveil it. The company has also put up a little teaser on its social media accounts to show the under-screen camera in action and to hype the industry followers regarding the upcoming tech.
Unfortunately, it sure seems like that the technology still has a long way to go and the output is not comparable to that of conventional sensors. That’s hardly surprising, as OPPO’s VP Brian Shen had said the same before and did caution that there will be some loss in image quality.
Apparently, the technology is still being developed and it seems that by demoing the technology on June 26, the company just wants to have some bragging rights. Therefore, it is unlikely that OPPO will actually launch a phone with an under-display front camera anytime soon and even if it does, early adopters should prepare themselves for a serious downgrade in the imaging results.
It remains to be seen how long it will take OPPO, and other companies, to improve the technology to the point that it can be commercialized. When such devices do make it to the market, the first crop of the under-display camera smartphones is likely to fetch a high price.
Right now, most high-end devices in the market come with a dual camera system on the front for selfies and thus, it’s safe to assume that it will be a long time before under-screen shooters catch up and churn out the same high-quality photos like today’s premium phones. Meanwhile, users will have to put up with notches, screen cutouts, and elevating mechanisms if they want phones with a high screen-to-body ratio.
A smartphone with such a unique technology but compromising on the image quality might be exactly the reason why Samsung is willing to wait out until this tech matures. The Korean giant will most likely be willing to let its Chinese competitors take all the fame for the time being, while it will utilize its time wisely in perfecting image quality from cameras embedded underneath the display.
