Intel has announced the launch of their latest Cascade Lake Xeon W processors which will offer higher core count, higher frequencies and a higher number of PCIe lanes when compared to the current gen Xeon W 2000 series.
Intel Announces Cascade Lake Based Xeon W 3000 Series CPU Lineup – Up To 28 Cores, 64 PCIe Lanes, and 4.6 GHz Boost Clocks at 205W
The Intel Xeon W 3000 series lineup is based on the same design architecture as the Cascade Lake family which utilizes the latest 14nm++ process node. While the previous Xeon W lineup featured a 14nm process node and utilized the Skylake architecture with support on the LGA 2066 socket, the new Xeon W 3000 series will be featuring support on the LGA 3647 socket which is the same as the one utilized by the Intel Skylake-SP and Cascade Lake-SP lineup.
Intel’s premium enthusiast class chip, the Xeon W-3175X is also featured on the LGA 3647 socket and this move may confirm more enthusiast class processors, similar to the Xeon W lineup, on the LGA 3647 HEDT platform. When it comes to SKUs, Intel has a total of nine processors in their lineup which includes the flagship Xeon W-3275. The processor features 28 cores, 56 threads and a max clock speed of 4.6 GHz (2.5 GHz base frequency) at a TDP of 205W. The chip should feature 38.5 MB of L3 cache (1.375 MB per core) and is priced at $4449 US.
There’s also another variant of the same chip known as Xeon W-3275M which can allow for up to 2 TB of DDR4-2933 memory support in hexa-channel mode. The standard SKUs can support 1 TB of DDR4-2933 memory. In addition to the specs, Intel’s Xeon W Cascade Lake lineup also features the highest PCIe lane count with 64 PCIe lanes available that were found out by WikiChip. Intel has had x16 lanes reserved for Omni-Path on their standard Skylake-SP and Cascade Lake-SP SKUs but the Xeon W class doesn’t make use of that so Intel has decided to open up the extra PCIe lanes for the platform itself.
