Google Maps Gets an On-Screen Speedometer in Some Regions

Google Maps

Google Maps, much like several other Google products, has come a long way from its origins as a no-nonsense lightweight navigation app to a confusing mishmash of features that most people won’t use. Not all of them are necessarily bad, though. The app even got the ability to order food directly from select restaurants without the hassle of third-party apps. A few days ago, Google Maps got a host of new features that included speed limit indication and speed camera alerts. The feature was tested in select regions but wasn’t rolled out until recently. Today some users are starting to see an option to see a speedometer while they drive.

First spotted by Android Police, the feature is available only to some users and can be switched on in the app’s preferences under Navigation Settings. You’ll see a new toggle switch that says ‘display speedometer’ at the bottom left corner of the screen when using driving guidance. It doesn’t seem to work in tandem with the new speed limit indicators just yet, but it’s definitely something to look out for in future updates. It is also worth noting that it doesn’t work with Android Auto for now.

It may be a while before users from all regions get the feature. Reports from users indicate that it is sparingly available in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, Portugal, Sweden, the UK, and the US. It is very likely that Google is testing the features on a few users before deploying it en-masse. Tracking the speed of a moving vehicle using just a mobile device and GPS is tricky, and its best that Google takes its time on this one. There will certainly be more than one instance of Google Maps’ speedometer showing a different reading than the one on the vehicle which will result in unpleasant encounters with law enforcement.
