AMD Radeon GPUs to Debut Within Upcoming Samsung Mobile SoCs

Samsung and AMD have announced a strategic partnership with Samsung unveiling plans to utilize AMD GPUs within upcoming mobile SoCs. Pairing Samsung’s Exynos CPU and AMD’s Radeon GPU designs could create a viable competitor against Apple’s upcoming A-Series and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoCs.

Samsung Exynos & AMD Radeon – High-PerformanRDNA

Samsung has worked with AMD to design a custom variant of AMD’s newly announced RDNA, or Radeon DNA, microarchitecture, to be paired with Samsung’s in-house Exynos CPUs. AMD’s RDNA microarchitecture is a departure from the GCN, or Graphics Core Next, microarchitecture launched in January of 2012. Initial RDNA products, such as upcoming Navi 10 GPUs will retain some aspects of the GCN design, but future Navi 20 GPUs will feature a totally redesigned architecture, fully moving away from GCN. Built for the 7nm node, RDNA will bring a 25% IPC and 50% power efficiency improvement over existing Vega GPUs, making the RDNA design quite efficient and suitable for low power devices such as mobile SoCs.

Samsung’s Exynos Versus Qualcomm’s Snapdragon & Apple’s A-Series SoCs

Samsung currently utilizes both their own Exynos and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors within their phones and tablets, though with the announcement of AMD’s partnership, Samsung may be gearing up to exclusively utilize Exynos SoCs within future products. Historically, Samsung’s Exynos SoCs have lagged slightly behind their Snapdragon alternatives, but Samsung’s partnership with AMD, as well as a potentially all-new CPU design may change this landscape. Qualcomm has been developing PC-focused processors, and Samsung may have plans to join Qualcomm within the PC market. Samsung will also take on Apple with upcoming Exynos processors, as Apple will have tough competition within the graphics section due to AMD’s RDNA GPU design.

The following statements were issued by AMD’s President and CEO Lisa Su, and Samsung’s President Inyup Kang:

‘Adoption of our Radeon Graphics technologies across the PC, game console, cloud, and HPC markets has grown significantly and we are thrilled to partner with industry leader Samsung to accelerate graphics innovation in the mobile arket. This strategic partnership will extend the reach of our high-performance Radeon Graphics into the mobile market, significantly expanding the Radeon user base and development ecosystem.’

‘As we prepare for disruptive changes in technology and discover new opportunities, our partnership with AMD will allow us to bring groundbreaking graphics products and solutions to market for tomorrow’s mobile applications. We look forward to working with AMD to accelerate innovations in mobile graphics technologies that will help take future mobile computing to the next level.’
