Windows 10 May 2019 Update: List of Issues That Are Yet to Be Fixed

Windows 10 May 2019 Update was released to the public after quite a long wait. The wait seems to be working for the Windows maker since unlike the last two feature updates, version 1903 has (almost) managed to avoid any disastrous bugs. However, some small compatibility issues keep popping up.

Among other compatibility issues, Microsoft has also reported identifying a driver compatibility issue with certain Intel display drivers. “After updating to Window 10, version 1903, brightness settings may sometime appear as if changes applied took effect, yet the actual display brightness doesn’t change,” the company explains. While this may not look like a big issue to many users, Microsoft has decided to put an upgrade hold for some devices.

“To safeguard your update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with certain Intel drivers from being offered Windows 10, version 1903, until this issue is resolved,” the company added. The Windows maker has also suggested to “restart your device to apply changes to brightness” as a workaround, but continues to warn users against manually updating to the latest version if they have affected driver.

Looks like Microsoft is choosing to err on the side of caution this time after losing user confidence in the Windows Update process after a number of issues were reported in the October 2018 Update. However, this time the company has tested version 1903 for a much longer time along with passing it through the Release Preview ring.

Multiple types of upgrade “holds” in place

Unlike the last release, Microsoft isn’t using the term “upgrade block” for these temporary delays and is going with “hold,” which does sound less dramatic. Apart from the Intel problem, there are three other issues that have pushed Microsoft to put what it calls compatibility, quality or a protective hold on some devices. Some of these include:

  • Loss of functionality in Dynabook Smartphone Link app | compatibility hold on devices with Dynabook Smartphone Link
  • Audio not working with Dolby Atmos headphones and home theater | protective hold on devices | resolution expected in mid-June
  • Duplicate folders and documents showing in user profile directory | quality hold on devices with redirected known folders | on May 21, Microsoft promised the resolution coming in late May

Microsoft has been quick to resolve several other issues that were reported after the public release of Windows 10 May 2019 Update. The company continues to advise against manually installing version 1903 since it will offer you the latest version itself when the OS is ready for your device. But, considering there haven’t been any major issues reported yet, you can go for the manual installation process. We will, however, recommend doing this on a secondary device just to make sure you don’t come across any damning bugs on your primary machine.
