Did a Ubisoft dev randomly confirm the development of a new Splinter Cell game on Twitter? Rumors a new entry in the series is in the works have been persistent for years now, and Sam Fisher recently showed up for a cameo in Ghost Recon Wildlands, and yet, Ubisoft still refuses to make it official. Well, apparently The Division 2 creative director Julian Gerighty didn’t get the “don’t talk about Splinter Cell” company memo, as he tweeted this yesterday…
Working on the next #SplinterCell with @danhaynow and @romcamor in #Lyon.
Can’t wait for #E3.
Crossover with #TheCrew2 with @_fergus_
Only missing @GhostRecon and @Rainbow6Game – but on their way.#FarCry#ForHonor #TheDivision2 #RainbowSixSiege #GhostRecon pic.twitter.com/oiwMPTny9Y— Julian Gerighty (@jgerighty) May 14, 2019
Following the tweet Gerighty briefly changed his Twitter background image and icon to something Splinter Cell themed, and followed up with “Plz don’t retweet. I may be in trouble.” The whole thing felt a bit tongue-in-cheek, and Ubisoft has since declared the whole thing a joke.
Julian was obviously joking as Julian likes to do. It looks like our creative directors are having fun right now. We do not have any announcements to make at this time.
Here’s the thing though – high-ranking devs at major publishers like Ubisoft have their Twitter activity closely monitored. They don’t just “joke” about heavily-rumored and anticipated games. Gerighty’s tweet felt like a clever bit of PR and the fact that it’s still up speaks volumes. Also, if there really is no Splinter Cell game coming, this would all come off rather mean-spirited. The gag only works if something is actually in development. Of course, take this all with a grain of salt, but this seems like yet another clue Splinter Cell is returning. As recently as last month Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot hinted something is in the works…
Now there are some things and some people that are now looking at the [Splinter Cell] brand; taking care of the brand. At one point you will see something, but I can’t say more than that. Also, because of Assassin’s Creed and all the other brands taking off, people wanted to work on those brands more. So, we have to follow what they like to do.
What do you think? Will we see a new Splinter Cell announced any time soon? Could Sam Fisher be sneaking into E3?
