Set iPhone, iPad to Automatically Delete Songs That Haven’t Been Played in a While

Music

Apple Music might be eating away your iPhone or iPad storage. Here’s how you can automatically delete songs that haven’t been played in a while.

Although Apple Music is an online streaming service, but as you keep on listening to songs, those songs are downloaded and cached into your device’s storage. But you also have the option to download songs straight to your device for offline listening, which is nothing less than handy. This ultimately means that as you keep on listening to your music and downloading it for later, you are essentially sacrificing your precious storage space too. This might not be a problem if you have a device that has storage north of 128GB, but if you have something with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB onboard, then this might actually become a problem down the line.

So, how do you fix up this wrong? Simple, iOS has a built-in feature that optimizes storage for you and deletes songs that are downloaded and which haven’t been played in a while. How do you enable this feature? From the Settings app, obviously. Pick up your iPhone or iPad and follow through till the end.

1. Launch the Settings app.

2. Scroll down and find Music then tap to open it up to reveal more options.

3. Now find the Optimize Storage, tap to open.

4. Turn on the feature and set Minimum Storage to None as shown in the screenshot below.

From now on, if there is a song that lives on your device and hasn’t been played in a while, iOS will delete it automatically. This applies to your Apple Music tracks only, not the ones copied from iTunes manually.

This is an extremely handy feature as we tend to download a lot of songs over time from Apple Music and after a couple of listens we drop the tracks into our playlist of oblivion. Sure, tastes change down the line but your old music is greedily ripping your storage apart for no reason, and it’s space which you can totally utilize towards capturing photos or recording videos, or maybe installing a few apps.
