It looks like AMD’s top AIB partner, Sapphire, has confirmed that red team is preparing two Radeon Navi GPUs with a planned announcement at Computex 2019. The AMD Radeon Navi GPUs recently started appearing on benchmark databases as we near the official announcement.
AMD Reportedly Working on Two Radeon Navi GPUs, Aiming RTX 2070 & RTX 2060 With $499 & $399 US Price Points
Videocardz was quick to grab hold of the news since the source appears to be a dead link now. The information came from a Sapphire PR manager who told the press in China that they are working on two AMD Radeon Navi models. Now the removal of the interview seems to confirm that the info we are looking at is quite legit and the Sapphire manager who reported may possibly be in trouble right now.
The two models that are reportedly being prepped include a $499 US model which would be an alternative to the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 and the $399 US model would be competing with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060. If we compare prices, we can see that the pricing of both AMD Radeon Navi is reportedly higher than the Polaris based Radeon RX 500 series which are mainstream cards and since Radeon Navi replaces them, they should also be mainstream offerings with Radeon VII serving as the enthusiast offering.
The AMD Radeon RX 590 launched at $279 US but the cheapest of the two Radeon Navi models will cost $120 US more. Even compared to the GeForce RTX 2060 ($349 US), the cheapest model would be $50 US more expensive. Now there can be several reasons for the higher price, first up, AMD is using GDDR6 memory on their cards and we know from leaked PCB shots that AMD Radeon Navi GPUs come with at least 8 GB of GDDR6 memory which is 2 GB more than the GeForce RTX 2060, so that could explain the higher price.
Also, AMD Radeon Navi can offer better performance than their respective competition. The top-tier Radeon Navi graphics card even has the same price as the RTX 2070 which means that AMD is quite confident with the performance levels they achieved with their next-gen mainstream offerings.
The Sapphire manager also reported that AMD Radeon Navi GPUs won’t support ray-tracing on hardware level so we can still see some kind of software level support like how Crytek managed to deliver good ray-tracing performance in their recent CryEngine Neon Noir demo. The manager also stated that the 7th July launch date is possible though that still needs to be confirmed in the official announcement which is a few days to go.
AMD Radeon Navi Graphics Cards – Here’s What To Expect
We know a few tidbits about the features the AMD Navi GPUs would support such as Ray Tracing which was recently confirmed to be a highlight on the next-gen Sony and Microsoft consoles which are utilizing AMD Navi 10 GPUs and Zen 2 based Ryzen CPUs. There was also talk about Variable Rate Shading being introduced on Navi GPUs as a bid by AMD to more modernize their Radeon graphics card for the mainstream market.
Navi would possibly be the last GPU architecture based on AMD’s GCN (Graphics Core Next) DNA. It was confirmed through AMD’s Linux driver that Navi is indeed based on GCN and has the latest GFX1010 codename while Vega was termed as GFX900. There would be some major improvements made on the Navi architecture in terms of IPC and 7nm efficiency would be a showcase of the new cards, providing more drastic results compared to the Radeon VII which was also 7nm based but was simply a die shrunk Vega 10 GPU (Vega 20).
We have already seen a leaked PCB shot for an upcoming Navi based GPU with GDDR6 memory and some rumored specifications which I have listed down below but one thing is for sure, Navi based Radeon GPUs will replace the existing mainstream cards while the Radeon VII will continue serving the enthusiast market as AMD’s flagship until a high-end Navi card is introduced which is currently rumored for sometime in 2020.
