Since launch earlier this week Rage 2’s Steam reviews have been decidedly mixed, and it isn’t necessarily because the game is lacking. Sure, some players are expressing gameplay-related concerns, but a lot of the complaints relate to the inclusion of Denuvo anti-tamper tech on Steam. Of course, plenty of PC games use Denuvo, but the Bethesda launcher version of the game doesn’t feature the DRM, and as you would expect, it runs better as a result. So yeah, fans have been understandably annoyed, and a bit perplexed, by Bethesda’s approach.
Well, thankfully, Steam users can now enjoy a DRM-free Rage 2 experience, as Bethesda has removed Denuvo after noting “a few requests.” The DRM change was a part of a small hotfix that dropped yesterday evening – get the full details, below.
- Removes Denuvo DRM (We saw a few requests.)
- Enables Crash Reporter for error reporting
- Fixes occasional crash related to Scaleform
- Fixes occasional crash on startup
- Fixes issue where Bethesda.net users would always default to English
- Razer Chroma effects enabled by default
Bethesda is promising more hotfixes in the days to come. Now that those pesky Denuvo issues are cleared up, you really should give Rage 2 a shot. I found it to be rough, and a bit cringy, but ultimately a lot of empowering fun in my full review…
Rage 2 is ugly, silly, and dated, and yet, I still enjoyed the hell out of most of my time with it. The game delivers the kind of low-stress, high-satisfaction fun you don’t often get from big-budget games these days. If you’re willing to check your brain at the title screen, I suggest you jump into this apocalypse now.
