OxygenOS is undoubtedly one of the better Android forks out there and OnePlus does an excellent job of keeping it updated with new features, security updates and Android builds. Today, OnePlus announced some new features that would be making their way to the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro via OxygenOS 9.5. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Zen Mode
OxygenOS 9.5 will come with what OnePlus calls ‘Zen Mode’. OEMs have been scrambling to implement some form of ‘anti-addictive’ measures in their devices ever since Google debuted Digital Wellbeing with Android Pie. It has all the standard features such as Wind Down, Grayscale and an infographic that shows you how long you used apps. The only notable difference between Zen Mode and Digital Wellbeing is that it can’t be stopped once you initiate it. It also ‘bricks’ the device by not letting you receive notifications and open apps. You can still make phone calls and access the camera, though. It may seem a little extreme, but it may be the most effective way of deterring people from looking at their phone.
Fnatic Mode
For reasons best known only to them, OnePlus decided to rebrand their “gaming mode” as “Fnatic mode”. For those not in the know, Fnatic is a professional esports team that has players across several platforms, including PUBG Mobile. Fnatic Mode essentially tunes your phone for maximum performance and sets the ‘mood’ for an intense gaming session by muting notifications, incoming calls and massively limiting background data.
There’s even a “Display enhancement” toggle that will boost the overall brightness of the panel and enhance the details of the “light and dark parts of the gaming display.” Coupled with the 90Hz ‘fluid’ AMOLED HDR10+-ready panel, it’ll be interesting to see how titles such as Fortnite perform on the OnePlus 7.
‘Better’ Screen Recorder
OxygenOS 9.5 is getting a native screen recorder that will let you record video and audio playing on your device and even record external sound via the microphone. You can record at the panel’s default resolution of 1440p or scale it down if you want to save some memory. You can also adjust the bit rate of the recording between 20Mbps to 1Mbps. There’s also the option to change orientation, show on-screen touches, and automatically pause recording when the screen is off.
There are also a slew of other features such as in-built spam protection (India only for now), deeper Google Lens integration and more. It is currently only available for OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro users, but should find its way to older devices in the coming weeks.
