OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro Get the Android Q Beta

OnePlus promised that their latest OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro would be eligible for the latest Android Q beta shortly after launch. Both devices ship with Android Pie-based OxygenOS 9.5 out of the box. OxygenOS 9.5 is host to a lot of interesting features such as a better screen recorder, Nightscape 2.0 and Zen Mode.

The OnePlus 6 and 6T have already received their build of the Android Q beta and today, the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro are to receive it. As the build is still in beta, a lot of apps may not work as intended. OnePlus was also nice enough to list enough the known bugs with the build.

  • ambient Display is not working
  • you cannot send SMS when VoLTE is on
  • navigation gesture is not working
  • recovery mode doesn’t work
  • some apps may not function as expected
  • there’s an issue with MTP that doesn’t allow you to copy rollback file from PC to Phone

You can download the Android Q build for the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro using the links. Once you’ve downloaded it, follow the instructions stated below to sideload the builds. Do note that this will completely wipe all of your on-device data, so we recommend that you back your data up before attempting the process. Developer previews, as the name suggests, are for developers. It’s best that you leave this build alone unless you absolutely can’t wait for Android Q.

  1. Download the Android Q ROM upgrade zip package using the appropriate links.
  2. Copy the downloaded file to the phone storage.
  3. Go to Settings -> System -> System Updates -> Click top right icon -> Local upgrade -> Click on the corresponding installation package -> upgrade -> System upgrade  and wait for it to complete.
  4. After the upgrade is complete, click Restart.
  5. The phone will boot into recovery mode to format user data, it will reboot again after formatting.
  6. Once the reboot is complete, you should be running Android Q.

If you don’t like the build and want to get back to a stable Android Pie build, you need to grab the OTAs for the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro. Replace the Android Q update zip with the corresponding Android Pie build, follow the same steps and you should be back on a stable version of Android Pie.
