So apparently, the NVIDIA GeForce ‘SUPER’ announcement is still happening and the latest reports indicate that we might be looking at launch as early as June. The report comes from Vonguru who during the Computex trade show, got details from some big manufacturers that the new launch is going to occur really soon and we may be looking at not one but two new GeForce graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce ‘SUPER’ Announcement Reportedly Bringing Two New Turing Based High-End Graphics Cards, Price Cuts For RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 Imminent
So the rumor of a new GeForce graphics card started when NVIDIA GeForce posted a teaser on its Twitter page saying that something ‘Super’ is coming. The closest event to the teaser turned out to be Computex but we saw nothing ‘Super’ at the event itself, even Jensen wasn’t there. For GeForce announcements that are supposed to be grand, it is Jensen who is taking the stage but NVIDIA only talked about their new RTX Studio stuff at the event.
However, there’s E3 coming and AMD is expected to announce their final details for Navi based Radeon RX 5000 series graphics cards there. This might be the perfect opportunity for NVIDIA to crash AMD’s event by not only making one but two big announcements. The source mentions that NVIDIA is preparing new GeForce graphics cards based on the Turing GPU architecture and that it’s their best-kept secret since no one knows the exact details. But some big manufacturers did reveal that they are expecting the announcement of at least two new high-end NVIDIA GeForce graphics card.
The two graphics cards will be based on the Turing GPU architecture and positioned above the RTX 2070 and the RTX 2080. I think that the RTX 2080 Ti will remain the flagship for a while but hey, I am all in for some big surprises myself. And since this would be an announcement, the actual launch will take place later on. It’s possible that NVIDIA might open the new cards for pre-orders but it will also be interesting how NVIDIA designates these cards in the current GeForce RTX 20 series family. Having them called ‘GeForce RTX 2070 Super’ and ‘GeForce RTX 2080 Super’ solves the confusion but I bet NVIDIA may have a more interesting naming scheme than what I just churned up. Another question that arises is that, what happens to the current RTX 2070 and RTX 2080?
We have long been hearing reports that NVIDIA is prepping up sorts of a price cut for their RTX 20 series Turing lineup. This might be the perfect opportunity for NVIDIA to drop prices on their RTX 2070 and RTX 2080 which are apparently going to be competing against the AMD Navi lineup. We saw in AMD’s demo of the Radeon RX 5700 that it was 10% ahead of the RTX 2070 in Vulkan based Strange Brigade. We also know that AMD is expected to price Navi at $399 and $499 with $499 US being the same price as the RTX 2070.
If NVIDIA decides to drop 100 USD on each of their TU104 cards, the new pricing would become $399 US for the RTX 2070 and $599 US which would be a lot more reasonable than their current rates. In fact, the source acknowledges that this could be the second ‘Super’ announcement that NVIDIA plans to make. The new cards can take up the positions of their non-Super counterparts at the current price rates, offering higher performance and I think faster GDDR6 memory and clock speeds can help them push at least 10-15% over current variants.
Overall, all of this definitely sounds interesting but we shouldn’t get too excited as NVIDIA may have other plans. There are only two weeks left in E3 so if there’s an announcement, we will know for sure pretty soon.
