Nioh 2, the sequel to 2017’s acclaimed hardcore action RPG, was announced at E3 2018 by Team NINJA. Shortly after that, the developers confirmed Nioh 2 would feature character creation unlike the first game and they also revealed there would be a demo for everyone to try before purchasing it.
Today, rather out of the blue, Team NINJA revealed that a Closed Alpha testing phase is almost upon us.
Some PS4 users are invited to take part in the Nioh 2 closed alpha to help gather feedback for the development. To ensure the team can manage the feedback, there are no plans to expand the alpha at the moment, but please keep an eye on our channels for more info in the future.
We don’t know anything more than that, but at least there’s a new gameplay trailer to go with the news. The game is currently confirmed for PlayStation 4; however, going by the previous title, chances are it will eventually launch on PC as well.
The first Nioh turned out very well, as you can read from Kai’s original review. It also sold over two and a half million units, which easily explains the upcoming sequel.
Putting the difficult nature of Nioh aside, the finely tuned combat that Team Ninja has crafted for this samurai epic is among the best I’ve played in years. Nioh more than satisfies my craving for a new Onimusha to come out of the Capcom teams while simultaneously feeding my hunger for another Souls-style affair. The difficulty may be enough to turn some prospective gamers from stepping into William’s boots, but those that persevere through the fields of yokai and demons will be rewarded with one of the finest PS4 exclusives to date, melding samurai action with the framework of the well-renowned Dark Souls series.
