May Security Patch Rolling Out to All Pixel Devices

android security

The May month’s patch is rolling out for all the Pixels (yes, even the Pixel C that’s still running Android 8.1 Oreo). The patch appears to be two days late, as Google usually rolls these things out on or before the 5th of every month. The update only patches some monthly security vulnerabilities and has no Pixel-specific changes as we see sometimes.

There are 10 issues resolved in the May security patch dated 2019-05-01 and 20 for 2019-05-05. Vulnerabilities range from high to critical, with the most severe relating to the media framework and a remote attacker possibly executing arbitrary code through a crafted file, something that has been a recurring theme in these updates for a long time. Google also notes that there are no reports of customers being affected by these security issues.

Google only notes that the May security patch contains many functional updates and improvements to various parts of the Android platform and supported Pixel devices. If you’re running a rooted device and need to sideload the updates, use the links below.

Android 9.0

Android 8.1

The update is also available OTA and should be available for download right about now. It shouldn’t be long before other OEMs start to roll out the patch for their devices. Essential has already released their update alongside Google, which brings Digital Wellbeing to the Essential Phone.
