Huawei Allowed to Deliver Android Updates Till Mid-August

Shortly after its Android license was revoked at US Government order, Huawei announced that they’d still continue to ‘build a safe and sustainable software ecosystem’. Huawei has also been granted a temporary license to continue pushing Android updates through mid-August.

According to a report by Reuters, the US Commerce Department has granted Huawei a temporary license to continue some activities which count on US companies. The license gives Huawei the ability to maintain its current networks as well as providing software updates to Android devices. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross said in a statement:

The U.S. Commerce Department on Monday created a temporary general license restoring Huawei’s ability to maintain existing networks and provide software updates to existing Huawei handsets.

The license, which was posted for public inspection, scales back the restrictions imposed by the U.S. government last week on Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s buying U.S. goods in order to help existing customers. The temporary license lasts until Aug. 19.

It should allow Huawei to push out critical security updates and ensure that devices that are already in the market operate normally. It is worth noting that this license expires on August 19th. If there isn’t a settlement by then, things get complicated for the Chinese telecommunications giant. The company is reportedly working on their in-house mobile operating system, but asking Android users to use a completely different OS is a hard ask.

The license grants Huawei what it needs to provide service and support, including software updates or patches, to existing Huawei handsets that were available to the public on or before May 16, 2019. The license will also assist customers in regions where the telecommunication infrastructure runs on equipment purchased from Huawei.

Earlier last year, another Chinese telecommunication giant ZTE was in a similar conundrum and ran the risk of losing their Android license. The company did, however, manage to get into an agreement with the U.S Department of Commerce and was able to resume operations (under strict surveillance). It seems unlikely that the restrictions imposed on Huawei will hold, and we should ideally see a resolution in the coming weeks.
