CAPCOM had a record-breaking year, as outlined last week by Chris. That’s because essentially all of its titles released in the past year or so have been successful, from the incredible Monster Hunter World (now over 12 million units sold) to Mega Man 11, from Resident Evil 2 remake to Devil May Cry 5.
The last two titles we’ve mentioned were developed with the new RE ENGINE, which made its debut in 2017 with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. In the Q&A following the fiscal year earnings, CAPCOM confirmed its studios are building ‘numerous’ games with that engine; they have also highlighted the importance of the RE ENGINE as the next generation of consoles approaches.
While we are unable to comment on the specific number of titles or release windows, there are numerous titles currently being developed internally with the RE ENGINE.
The games we developed using the RE ENGINE during this current hardware generation have received critical acclaim, and from the early stages of building this engine, we kept the ability to augment it for next-generation development in mind; as such, we view the RE ENGINE as one of our strengths that will contribute to next-generation game creation.
For the next fiscal year, though, CAPCOM is planning to release only one major title, the Iceborne expansion to Monster Hunter World. When asked why that was the case, the executives said it’s due to the longer development cycles that are necessary nowadays to make triple-A titles.
It is a reality that development cycles are trending longer for games developed to a world-leading standard. As such, it is possible that there will be a single major new title release in a given fiscal year due to the composition of our title pipeline. However, the profitability of the Digital Contents business is rising, with widespread digital sales driving longer sales lifecycles for games as well as multifaceted revenue opportunities, which includes catalog sales.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is due to release on September 6th for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, while PC gamers will have to wait for the arrival of Winter (you can now go ahead with the Game of Thrones puns).
