So today Larian changed their website to tease everybody, it’s a simple tease, a great big III (3). Now, one of the joys of the internet is that there are some brilliant sleuths out there, I quite literally don’t think anything gets past them. In the case of this tease, either Larian is being downright horrible, or they may have just slipped up a little.
On Twitter, a lovely fellow called Kunken has gone and delved into the page, looked into the video and found that the site could actually be hinting at Baldur’s Gate III, not Divinity: Original Sin III. This is his original tweet, with a few follow-up ones explaining his findings.

Having downloaded the video myself and followed his methods, I came up with the same result. I downloaded the video and opened it using Notepad+++, what I found was pretty conclusive, to say the least. Very early on in the text, you can find the lines

Even more, evidence pointing towards Baldur’s Gate III is a later set of lines, ones that specifically state “Baldur’s Gate, Dungeons & Dragons, and their respective logos are registered trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC.”

Now, there were rumours in the past indicating that Larian may have acquired the rights to Baldur’s Gate from Atari, though Larian did deny this. I have reached out to both Atari and Larian now, asking Atari if they hold the IP rights to Baldur’s Gate and also to Larian, asking the same question and also asking if, indeed, Baldur’s Gate is the game in development.
I genuinely hope it is the case because it’s been a long time since we had the joys of the originals, with the enhanced editions being decent stopgaps at least. Larian is a studio known for their quality and is certainly busy, with this game and Divinity: Fallen Heroes which I recently previewed both in development.
I’ll keep you informed with any responses I receive.
