YouTube TV Now Costs $49.99/Month, $54.99 When Billed Through Apple

YouTube TV

Shortly after YouTube revealed that they’re working on interactive content, YouTube TV today announced a price hike for all users. New subscribers will be subjected to the price change immediately while existing subscribers get to wait until May 13. The price hike will be a $10 increase on the monthly cost bringing the price to $49.99/month. The changes were announced via a blog post today.

YouTube says that the price increase is so that it can keep bringing its customers “the best possible service,” today including the addition of Discovery network branded channels. Eight total channels are being added to YouTube TV as of this week: Discovery Channel, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, Investigation Discovery, Animal Planet, Travel Channel, and MotorTrend. EPIX is also available for an additional charge. They’ll also add OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network later this year.

Apple users will have to shell out $5 more

You’ll have to pay even more if you own an Apple device. Users who are subscribed to the service via one will be billed at $54.99/month. The extra $5 can be attributed to the fact that Apple takes a 30 per cent cut during the first year of an annual subscription. It has resulted in a lot of friction between Apple and a host of other companies; Spotify being the most recent one.

YouTube TV started out at $35/month and then increased its price to $40/month in the spring of 2018. As the service keeps expanding and adding more channels, the price is bound to rise.  With the addition of the new programs, YouTube TV now has over 70 channels. You also get six accounts per household, a cloud DVR with no storage space limits, three concurrent streams, and local affiliate coverage in over 90 per cent of the markets where YouTube TV is available. The selection of channels isn’t quite as diverse as traditional network television, but it’s getting there.
