Qualcomm has unveiled three new chipsets belonging to its midrange Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 700 series. During the 2019 Qualcomm AI Day, the Snapdragon 730G, Snapdragon 730, and Snapdragon 665 were introduced, and their primary aim is to bring premium features to devices with more affordable price tags. The New Chipsets Offer Better AI Performance And Imaging Capabilities
The Snapdragon 665 will succeed the Snapdragon 660 and will most likely power budget Android phones in the future. Compared to its predecessor, the new chip will offer two times faster AI performance because of the inclusion of the 3rd generation Qualcomm AI Engine, faster Adreno 610 GPU, and two Hexagon Vector eXtensions (HVX.)
The chip also comes with the new Spectra 165, which isn’t a substantial improvement over Snapdragon 660’s Spectra 160 ISP but the improved AI processing can be expected to make up for that. The new chipset can also support a triple camera system. According to Qualcomm, Snapdragon 665 is 20 percent more power efficient than its predecessor, which will lead to better battery life.
Moving on, the 8nm Snapdragon 730 Mobile Platform also offers double the AI processing power of its predecessor, the Snapdragon 710, thanks to the 4th generation Qualcomm AI Engine, Adreno 618 GPU, Kyro 470 CPU, and a Tensor accelerator. The chipset gets the Spectra 350 ISP, which also has Integrated AI and is four times more efficient than the ISP of the Snapdragon 710. With the Kryo 470, Qualcomm says these deliver a 35 percent performance improvement over the Kryo 360 cores running in the Snapdragon 710. The new chip also supports the Wi-Fi 6 standard and the company’s aptX adaptive intelligent Bluetooth audio compression technology.
Lastly, the Snapdragon 730G is gaming-centric and can render up to 15 percent faster graphics rendering when compared to the Snapdragon 730. It will be able to display high-quality visuals on QHD+ displays, with the SoC also having inherited features related to gaming from the Snapdragon 855, including Jank Reducer, Wi-Fi Latency Manager, and Anti Cheat Extensions. The chipset also offers some notable imaging related features such as Cinemagraphs and 720p slow-motion video shooting at 960fps.
All in all, the new chipsets offer improvements in AI processing, performance, efficiency, and imaging when compared to their predecessors and will allow mid-range smartphones to get some of the features offered by the premium Snapdragon 855. As a result, we can expect future mid-range and price/performance handsets to perform even better down the road.
