Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9 Plus, and the Galaxy Note 9 weren’t pivotal for the Korean giant’s success in the smartphone space, forcing the company to bring out the big guns when it unveiled its Galaxy S10 series. The lack of compelling features present in Samsung’s premium lineup for 2018 might have encouraged customers to look for alternatives, which is why according to the latest research, a lot of previous Samsung device users ended up owning the Pixel 3 or OnePlus 6T. However, the story is much different than you’re being let one, so let us jump into the details.

Very Few iPhone Owners Gravitated to the Android Camp, Showing Their Preference for iOS

According to Counterpoint Research, around 51 percent of Pixel 3 buyers in the U.S. were owners of a Galaxy smartphone. However, to clarify the jump to Google’s flagship phone, 31 percent came from a three-year-old Galaxy S7. Perhaps the thought of a superior camera system and stock Android might have compelled them to pick up Google’s high-end model.

Around 37 percent of OnePlus 6T buyers previously either owned a Galaxy J2 Prime or the Galaxy S7. The previous statistic shows that a lot of previous Samsung device owners preferred a flagship with an affordable price tag. This does not mean that a lot of Galaxy S9 and Note 9 customers were willing to switch to devices from Google and OnePlus but it still doesn’t mean Samsung’s premium 2018 series was a successful one.

“The newest Google Pixel lineup was certainly successful in terms of disrupting the premium market space at Verizon. Google invested a lot of marketing money during Q4 2018 resulting in strong sales of the Google Pixel 3 lineup. Over half of all new Pixel 3 owners came from Samsung. A total of 31% of Pixel 3 sales came from previous Samsung Galaxy S7 owners. The Pixel was built to lead Android innovation and be a device to sway the iOS base over to Android. Over 80% of volumes are coming from its Android partners. This is probably seen as a disappointment.”

A very small percentage of customers switching to the new models were iPhone owners, revealing their preference for iOS. It might also highlight the reliability of Apple’s iPhones in terms of longevity and extended software updates, but it can also be related to personal preference. As for the current Galaxy S10 lineup, the market has responded well to the three models that were initially introduced and Samsung isn’t done with this year’s premium flagship family. Both the OnePlus 6T and Pixel 3 are fantastic devices in their own right, but both manufacturers will have to step up their game if they want to match or beat the Galaxy S10, at least in other areas.

For the OnePlus 7, it should be a better overall device for a cheaper price, while the Pixel 4 could further improve on the camera, and perhaps it could feature a more attractive design than its predecessor.
