When Google launched the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL for $799 and $899, respectively, the tech giant also reduced the price of its previous-generation Pixel 2 XL. During the time when the new devices were officially unveiled, the Pixel 2 XL was discounted to $699 while the Pixel 2 remained unchanged at $649. Instead of continuing to sell the two models, Google outright discontinued them, but that might also mean the company is getting ready to introduce new products in the near future.
Removal of the Pixel 2 & Pixel 2 XL Means the Cheaper Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL Might Be Getting Unveiled Soon
If you visit the Google Store right now and attempt to access the Pixel 2 listing, you will be directed to the Pixel 3 page instead. If you visit the ‘Phones’ section of the website, you will notice the terms Pixel 3, Stand, Buds, and their related accessories, but no mention of the Pixel 2 or the larger Pixel 2 XL.
The only place where the Pixel 2 is mentioned is if you compare the three iterations of Pixel devices, but on the Google Store, there is no option to purchase the 2017 flagship lineup. It is honestly a shame that Google decided to scrape the phone series, which is the complete opposite of what Apple is doing.
Apple continues to stock the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, models that launched back in 2016. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, even by today’s standards, are very impressive smartphones, especially in the imaging department. Their single rear cameras are able to accomplish more than what dual-camera sensors can achieve. One reason why Google might be discontinuing the series is to make way for its rumored Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, which have been doing the rounds lately.
With image quality reportedly similar to that of the Pixel 3, the Pixel 3a seems like a fine choice for customers who don’t want to spend the extra money to pick up the more premium devices. Also, the pricing leak of the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL suggest that they will cost between $499 and $599 in the U.S., depending on which model you pick up, so keeping both the Pixel 2 range and the cheaper Pixel 3 one available for purchase might result in deleterious sales for one lineup, and Google seems to be in no mood to suffer losses from its hardware division at this stage.
