I’ve lost count of the number of times Facebook has promised to make Messenger faster, lighter and whatnot. The messaging app continues to be a cluttered, bloated mess even after several updates that aimed at fixing the problem. The only good thing to come out it, in my opinion, was a Dark Mode. Today, Facebook posted another blog post announcing some of the new changes that we can expect to see in the coming year. The project is called ‘Lightspeed’ and it aims at reducing Messenger’s app size by 70MB, which will bring it down to a modest 30MB. The launch time will be ‘under 2 seconds’ too, apparently.
Messenger is also going to have a dedicated space for you to easily find content such as Stories, images and videos from people who you message most. The next feature is an interesting one and will allow people to watch videos together in real time on Messenger. It creates a virtual living room where you can discover and share videos from inviting others to watch the video together in real time while messaging or on a video chat.
There’s also going to be a desktop app for Messenger which will be available for both Windows and MacOS. Messenger Desktop will have the same features as its mobile counterpart and will be rolled out globally later. The real question here is, why would one need Messenger on a desktop when one can access more or less the same features through a browser?
It was bad enough when Facebook stripped away the ability to send and receive messages from the main app. That’s all we want, really. Messenger is a well-known data and battery hog, and that isn’t changing anytime soon. The group video feature looks nice, at least.
