DigiTimes: AMD Will See Sharp Sales Increase In 2H 2019, Driven By 7nm Parts

DigiTimes recently published a report which cites insider sources at PC and parts manufacturers and states that AMD will see a sharp sales increase during the end of the year as its 7nm inventory enters the market. AMD is expected to launch its 7nm parts in 2H 2019 – including the commercial Ryzen 3000 series and the 64-Core Rome enterprise lineup.

AMD to gain market share in 2H 2019 as 7nm parts ship, according to Taiwanese report

The company has been gaining a lot of steam entering into 2019 after making its Zen debut last year, and from the looks of it – nothing is stopping it now. Unlike the much larger Intel, AMD has a lot of room to manoeuvre through margins and this is something that I expect it to capitalize on during 2H 2019. AMD’s 7nm (TSMC) parts are going to be the first sub-14nm parts on the market and as the timelines currently stand – they are going to beat out Intel’s equivalent 10nm (Intel) parts comfortably. This headstart is going to convert into market share increase as it benefits from the process efficiency and economy advantages:

AMD’s third-generation Ryzen series CPUs featuring the new Zen 2 architecture, and corresponding X570 chipsets are set to be unveiled at Computex 2019 at the end of May, while AMD’s new server CPUs codenamed Rome will begin shipments in mid-2019. The company’s next-generation Navi series GPUs will also make their debut in the third quarter. All chips will be fabricated on 7nm process. – DigiTimes

AMD’s 7nm Ryzen processors (also called Ryzen 3000 series) the X570 chipset will be unveiled at Computex according to this report with Rome shipments beginning just a tad bit later. Navi, on the other hand, is going to hit the shelves in the third quarter (Gamescom?) which is in line with what I have told our readers before.

Because of Intel’s CPU shortages, Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Lenovo have been placing orders for AMD’s CPUs for their notebooks since the second half of 2018, while Asustek Computer has adopted AMD’s solutions in a couple of its gaming notebooks that have achieved better-than-expected sales. Acer and HP have also been using AMD’s platform for their Chromebooks. With the increasing adoption, AMD is expected to see its share significantly increase in the notebook market. – DigiTimes

Intel CPUs have been in short(er) supply as the market shifted from 4-core only dies to as many as 18-core in the HEDT segment and 6-8 in the mainstream segment last year. This coupled with the fact that Intel’s 14nm node is now so effing (pardon the language, but the expletive is needed to emphasize the magnitude) mature that performance metrics are off the charts has led to an increasingly short supply in the market – which AMD is more than happy to lap up. Considering AMD was completely uncompetitive just a few years ago, this also translates into an increase in market share.

All in all looks like good things are in store for AMD in the second half of the year, and from the looks of it Lisa’s bet is almost certainly paying off. Major laptop vendors like HP, Acer, Dell and even Lenovo have jumped on board the AMD bandwagon to roll out Ryzen based solutions. Since Ryzen parts are going to be cheaper than Intel’s alternatives we are also anticipating what is probably the first increase in affordability in a very long time.
