Apple has confirmed in an updated support document that the Apple Pencil 2 might interfere with your car’s key fob, preventing you from unlocking your vehicle.
The Apple Pencil 2 is a huge upgrade in terms of design and functionality. It even allows users to charge up the accessory by simply attaching it magnetically to the iPad Pro. Now, the thing is, that magnetic charging method may actually interfere with your car’s key fob (keyless entry device) causing an issue that may prevent you from unlocking your vehicle.
The issue has been highlighted by Apple itself in an updated document, which is as follows:
If you’re charging your Apple Pencil (2nd generation) with your iPad Pro and your car’s keyless entry device (key fob) is nearby, signal interference might prevent you from unlocking your car with your key fob.
If this happens, you can simply move your iPad Pro away from the key fob or remove your Apple Pencil from your iPad Pro and store it separately. When Apple Pencil is finished charging, any resulting signal interference will cease.
If you thought the above quote was a little too much to digest then let me break it down for you real quick. What it essentially says is that if your Apple Pencil 2 is in the process of being charged with your iPad Pro and near your car, you may not be able to unlock your car using the key fob. The solution? Keep your Apple Pencil 2 separately while you enter your vehicle or move your iPad Pro away from the key fob itself.
It’s also worth mentioning here that if your Apple Pencil 2 is fully charged and magnetically attached to the iPad Pro, you will not experience this issue at all. The Apple Pencil 2 must be in the process of being charged in order for this issue to manifest itself.
Interestingly, this issue does not affect every single car model. In fact if you have a key fob that is poorly shielded, only then this problem may manifest itself the most. If you can’t handle the cringe at all, then you might want to follow what Apple has highlighted in its document.
Personally, I have been using the iPad Pro as my primary computer for a long time now alongside the Apple Pencil 2. So far, I haven’t had a single issue like the one pointed out above. But it does not mean in any way that this problem does not exist.
