Anti-Cheat Issue Is Still Affecting Windows 10 May 2019 Update – Microsoft Advises Users to Run Latest Versions of Games

fix Windows 10 GSOD

Microsoft has made the May 2019 Update available for everyone who is interested in using the new version through the Release Preview ring. However, some users reported seeing a “This PC can’t be upgraded” alert when trying to install version 1903 on their machines. They also confirmed that they were able to upgrade to the new version after they removed games that use the anti-cheat software.

Version 1903 has been experiencing issues with these games for quite some time now and while Microsoft had earlier said that the issue has been resolved by game makers delivering fixes, the problem still shows up for some users.

Most game makers have released patches; run the latest versions to avoid crashes and upgrade issues

While some users are unable to upgrade to the latest version, others are also experiencing crashes once they have managed to install Windows 10 May 2019 Update. In a blog post today while announcing a new Preview Build from the Windows 10 version 2020, Microsoft acknowledged that the older versions of anti-cheat software used with games is what is causing the problems.

“We are working with partners on getting their software updated with a fix, and most games have released patches to prevent PCs from experiencing this issue,” Microsoft said. The Windows maker also recommended that in order “to minimize the chance of running into this issue, please make sure you are running the latest version of your games before attempting to update the operating system.”

The company added that it is working with anti-cheat and game developers to avoid similar issues with Windows 10 20H1. For now, users are advised to make sure they have the latest version of the games before they install Windows 10 May 2019 Update.

The May 2019 Update isn’t available for public consumption yet. While anyone can sign up with the Release Preview ring and get their hands on the latest version, these issues will come up over the next few weeks. Once they have been addressed, Microsoft will push 1903 to everyone making sure the next Windows 10 version doesn’t affect user experience like the October 2018 Update.
