Xiaomi Black Shark 2 is official with the Snapdragon 855 and 12GB of RAM

The “gaming smartphone” category isn’t something that many people thought would succeed. In fact, we’re still so early in this category that we’re not sure if it will be a success. Still, mobile gaming is getting bigger and bigger and there have been a few smartphone OEMs attempting to benefit from its popularity. Even popular PC games these days are getting ported to smartphones, so a well-designed device with gaming in mind makes a lot of sense for some people. We don’t have sales numbers for Xiaomi’s first attempt, the Black Shark, but the company has officially announced the Xiaomi Black Shark 2.

So far we have seen devices such as the Razer Phone and Razer Phone 2Nubia Red Magic MarsASUS ROG Phone, and the aforementioned Xiaomi Black Shark. Each of these devices offers something unique to the table when it comes to mobile gaming benefits. Whether it’s a more advanced cooling system, accessories, improved hardware, etc. For example, the ASUS ROG Phone has a plethora of different mobile gaming peripherals that help round out the gaming experience, while the Razer Phone and Razer Phone 2 brings the 120Hz display for buttery smooth gameplay.

Black Shark 2

After the company launched the Black Shark, we knew that there was a successor in the works. We had the mid-cycle release of the Black Shark Helio but the company confirmed that a real successor to the device was in the works. The original was launched in April so it makes sense that we are seeing the gaming smartphone announced in March. Again, we didn’t have anything to go on as far as a release date was concerned but late last month the sub-brand launched a new headquarters in India.

We assumed the launch was imminent and now it has been announced. The smartphone features the Snapdragon 855 SoC, will come in both an 8GB of RAM/128GB storage option alongside a massive 12GB of RAM/256GB storage option. To help with cooling during those longer gaming sessions Xiaomi has said the Black Shark 2 uses the world’s first “direct touch multilayer liquid cooling system” and claims it helps keep the CPU 14-degrees cooler. It also features a 6.39-inch AMOLED display at a 1080 x 2340 resolution, a 20MP f/2.0 front-facing camera, a 12MP f/1.7 and a 12MP f/2.2 module with 2x optical zoom dual rear camera setup, and a 4,000mAh capacity battery.
