The Huawei Mate X may be joined by the Huawei Mate 20 X in Huawei’s 5G lineup

The 2019 Mobile World Congress just wrapped up, and it’s fair to say that the event was the most packed in years. Before the event even started, we were met by OPPO’s announcement of 10X zoom technology followed by Xiaomi’s unveiling of the 5G Mi Mix 3 and European Mi 9 a few hours later. That same day, Huawei, HMD Global, and LG announced their newest flagship phones—the foldable 5G Huawei Mate X, the penta-camera Nokia 9, and the hand-scanning LG G8 ThinQ. The first actual day of MWC brought us the Sony Xperia 1 and the ZTE Axon 10 Pro. I haven’t even mentioned any of the mid-range smartphones that were announced, the two smartphones with full QWERTY keyboards, Nubia’s smartphone/smartwatch hybrid, the upcoming LG V50 ThinQ, or any of Google’s or Qualcomm’s announcements. Amidst these new product announcements, there was one that caught me off guard. Huawei actually announced they’re making a second 5G smartphone: an upgraded Huawei Mate 20 X with 5G connectivity.

The Huawei Mate 20 X is a 7.2-inch smartphone that launched with the Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro. It’s like a hybrid between the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro in that it has the same design as the Mate 20 but the same cameras as the Mate 20 Pro. The Huawei Mate 20 X has the HiSilicon Kirin 980 mobile platform but does not have a 5G modem. Presumably, an upgraded model of the Mate 20 X will be equipped with the Balong 5000 5G modem. The gargantuan Mate 20 X already has a 5000mAh battery, so we don’t think the device will be getting a bigger battery as we’ve seen with the jump to 5G on the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and LG V50 ThinQ.

This news was first picked up by TechCrunch, with all other outlets reporting on this linking back to TechCrunch’s article. None of the 5G device lists compiled by various online publications after MWC 2019 mentioned the existence of a 5G Huawei Mate 20 X, so we couldn’t find any other information on the device. We wanted to verify TechCrunch’s report so we reached out to Huawei’s PR representatives. When reached for comment, our PR contact told us they did not have any content including the 5G statement, but that we should refer to the press conference for all announcements. As it turns out, Huawei’s CEO actually did mention a 5G Mate 20 X at the very end of the hour-long press conference.

After CEO Richard Yu unveiled the pricing of the Huawei Mate X, he mentioned that the company would be sending their devices to carriers for 5G field trials. He then says the company has two models of their 5G phones: the Huawei Mate X and an upgraded Huawei Mate 20 X. Since he didn’t say much, we can’t be sure that the 5G Mate 20 X will actually be made available to consumers. We would be surprised if Huawei manufactures a special 5G Mate 20 X model only for carrier testing, however. Like Qualcomm, I’m sure that Huawei has 5G smartphone reference designs that they’re using for network testing.

I have embedded the launch event video below. Skip to 1:43:48 in the video if it doesn’t automatically load.

So there you have it. The €2299 Huawei Mate X won’t be the only 5G smartphone released by Huawei. The company will also re-release the Huawei Mate 20 X, although we don’t know if it’ll actually be available for consumers and if so, what its price will be. So far, Xiaomi is the only company to have unveiled a 5G smartphone at a sensible price. We’ll let you know if we learn more details about the new Mate 20 X.
