Smartphone screens are getting bigger beyond imagination and with this, the idea of foldable smartphones is really echoing with select smartphone makers. Big names like Samsung and Huawei are rushing in to grab the world’s attention with their foldable smartphones while Motorola is preparing to revive the clamshell magic with a reinvented Moto RAZR. But amidst all of this, Huawei is the only company that seems to be looking at India as a prospective market. The company plans to launch the 5G variant of the foldable Huawei Mate X in India, later this year.
Huawei’s decision to launch the future-friendly Huawei Mate X in India comes as a pleasant (and mild) shock instead of a surprise as the smartphone will be priced in the ballpark of around $2500 – or even more. By direct currency conversion, that is ₹1,72,000. India, as a price-sensitive market for smartphones, thrives on the segments of budget smartphones and affordable flagships. On average, Indians spend less than ₹10,000 while buying a new smartphone, and even as the premium segment (above ₹30,000) is slowly rising, brands like OnePlus and Honor dominate it.
For Huawei, however, selling the Huawei Mate X in India is not as important as getting Indians exposed to and familiar with the concept of smartphones with foldable displays. For this, Huawei is planning to expand its offline presence and mulling partnerships with retails chains like Croma. This should help intrigued customers get a favorable and extensive hands-on experience with the Huawei Mate X.
Huawei let me hold the Huawei Mate X at a closed-door meet in New Delhi, India, but I wasn’t allowed to fold it, owing to the pre-production nature of the unit. On top of that, a lot of aspects including the resolution of the 8-inch display, the resolution and the functions of each of the three cameras have either not been finalized yet or were purposefully refrained by the company.
But over the next six months or so, Huawei should be able to produce plenty of commercial units of the Huawei Mate X, sufficient enough to gratify many curious users in a huge market like India. As for its sale in the country, Huawei isn’t very ambitious and nor am I very hopeful that it will find more than a handful of buyers. But isn’t that what the Mate X deserves – a limited edition treatment?
