Windows 7 is now in the final year of official support with the end of support deadline arriving on January 14, 2020. Microsoft had earlier announced an add-on support plan for businesses, which will go live in April. The company has today announced that beginning next month, it will also start notifying Windows 7 customers to update their machines to Windows 10 or Windows 8.1.
However, this won’t hopefully be like 2015 when users were offered a free upgrade to Windows 10 and had to deal with constant upgrade notifications. Since there’s no official free upgrade plan, Microsoft is also planning on not annoying you with upgrade notifications (which costed the company quite a few pennies back when it released Windows 10), as you can choose to click on do not notify me again to stop receiving these alerts. We are hoping that would actually work this time.
Here’s what Microsoft writes:
Beginning next month, if you are a Windows 7 customer, you can expect to see a notification appear on your Windows 7 PC. This is a courtesy reminder that you can expect to see a handful of times in 2019. By starting the reminders now, our hope is that you have time to plan and prepare for this transition. These notifications are designed to help provide information only and if you would prefer not to receive them again, you’ll be able to select an option for “do not notify me again,” and we will not send you any further reminders.
If you do want to upgrade to Windows 10 but don’t want to pay $139 for a new operating system, you can still avail the free upgrade offer by using your Windows 7 license key when activating Windows 10. While the company has never officially announced this method to activate Windows 10, it continues to work for users.
While Microsoft flaunts Windows 10 as the “most secure Windows ever,” some of our readers have called Windows 10 the worst OS ever. If you fall into that category, you can choose to go with Linux or macOS. But, regardless of the operating system you choose, it’s time to move on since staying with Windows 7 would expose you to additional security threats.
