The Samsung Galaxy Note FE (Fan Edition) is the reincarnation of the Galaxy Note 7, a device that was “permanently discontinued” because of the phone’s tendency to catch fire. Samsung equipped the Galaxy Note FE with a smaller battery, and over the years, we haven’t heard of any more serious issues with the device — safe to say that the Note FE is safe.
Samsung has also been providing timely software updates to the Galaxy Note FE, much like how it does to its other flagships. The Note 7 was launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and the Note FE was launched with Android 7.1 Nougat and then updated to Android 8.0 Oreo. Samsung promised in its update roadmap that the device will receive Android Pie in March 2019, and true to its word, the OEM is now rolling out the Android 9 Pie update with One UI for the device.
The ~1.5GB update for the Galaxy Note FE SM-N935 brings the newest version of Android to the device, along with March 2019’s security patches. The update is in the early stages of rollout and has been received by users in Saudi Arabia, Philippines and Vietnam at least; we expect all regions to receive this update within the next few days.

We proclaimed the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 to be “a remarkable phone for life“, which would have held true had the phone not met with such an unfortunate end. With the Galaxy Note FE, though, you get almost everything that the Note 7 stood for, and at a cheaper price tag. Samsung’s continued support for the device also brings back the trust that was lost in the Note 7’s fiery incidents. As a brand, Samsung also appears to have recovered, as devices after the Note 7 have gone on to receive the praise they deserved. All’s well that ends well.
