Samsung Reportedly Preparing Two More Foldable Smartphones – One of Them Might Challenge Huawei’s Mate X

Samsung preparing two foldable smartphones

Samsung launched its first foldable device, the Galaxy Fold, alongside the Galaxy S10 series and the phone will be available starting April 26 in the U.S. and May 3 in Europe. The phone folds on the inside and according to the latest report, Samsung is already experimenting with more formats, with new information stating that two more foldable phones are in the pipeline.

Galaxy Fold’s Successor Might Be Released by the End of This Year With Some Major Design Adjustments

The South Korean behemoth is apparently considering two designs; a clamshell-type phone which folds horizontally from top to bottom and an out-folding device which folds vertically, kind of like Huawei’s recently launched Mate X. The report further says that the current clamshell prototype has a secondary screen on the outside and Samsung will decide whether to keep it or drop it after gauging the market response of the Galaxy Fold, which also has a separate outer display.

On the other hand, the out-folding phone wouldn’t need a standalone display as the main screen will be used as the smartphone display as well. This would also make the phone thinner than the Galaxy Fold. Samsung is apparently planning to release the clamshell phone by the end of this year or early next year as the exact launch details of the outward folding phone aren’t know yet. Both the devices might also come with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Meanwhile, Samsung is also trying to do something about the display of the Galaxy Fold, as it allegedly creases after about 10,000 folds. However, it seems the company is unlikely to arrive at a solution anytime soon and is instead considering a free screen replacement program.

It is also worth mentioning that the press has already noticed an unsightly crease towards the middle of the display on presumably a brand new unit of the Galaxy Fold that was demoed by Samsung at its Unpacked event. It remains to be seen if Samsung has sorted that issue out or is it something that the users of the first-generation of foldable devices will have to accept as a given.

Still, even after paying $1980 for a smartphone, owners should not have to face this problem, but let us see how Samsung is able to tackle this obstacle down the road.
